Karen Lovaas is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Communication Studies Department, Co-Coordinator of the Global Peace, Human Rights and Justice Studies Minor Program and Interim Director of the Conflict Resolution Certificate Program at San Francisco State University. Following B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication Studies, Dr. Lovaas earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Her published research has primarily focused on sexualities and communication; her other ongoing scholarship, activism and teaching are in the areas of decarceration, ecology and environmental justice. She has been a volunteer at San Quentin State Prison for the last 16 years, where she has taught college courses and co-facilitates social justice curricula.
