Meet The Candidates: Lionnell “Badu” Smith
Overview
Join us welcoming the candidates of our latest faculty search. Begining this Friday, 2/24, at 2pm with Badu Smith and their presentation "Towards a Prophetic [Communication] Pedagogy: The Critical Pedagogic Practice of Bearin' Witness"
This presentation offers a description of the presenter’s current and projected research which aims to extend the ongoing conversation regarding critical and decolonial approaches to teaching communication and rhetorical studies. Drawing on antiracist and Afrocentric practices, the presenter proposes Black prophetic rhetoric as a radical pedagogical framework which engages the cultural politics of identity in the classroom and emphasizes rhetorical action in the fight for liberation and justice. In particular, the presenter promotes the pedagogic practice of “bearin’ witness” as a critical and rhetorical response to oppression and injustice. The ultimate goal of the presentation is to situate Black prophetic rhetoric as an epistemic imperative within the continuous efforts of critical communication and rhetorical pedagogies
